ABOUT THE ROLE

The Operations Division is the largest within AMSA and is responsible for regulating domestic and international commercial vessels operating in Australia. Our teams are located right across Australia and include both office-based and field-based staff.

We’re seeking a Senior Work Health and Safety Officer who will be responsible for developing and maintaining key WHS documentation, including policies, procedures, guidance and training material. A key function of this role is to lead and promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Operations staff.

The Senior WHS Officer is a dedicated WHS capability within Operations to ensure our processes and practices align with WHS legislation and the organisational WHS management framework.

The role will work as part of a small, multi-disciplinary team responsible for Operations policy implementation and capability management within the division.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing specialist expertise and advice on a broad range of WHS matters, including in risk management and policy development as they relate to staff within the Operations Division.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of WHS risk management and risk assessment activities within Operations.
  • Having an in-depth knowledge of roles and functions within the division and an understanding of how changes in the broader work environment impact staff safety and WHS requirements.
  • Developing strong strategic partnerships within Operations and across AMSA to implement a range of WHS initiatives aligned with the organisation’s WHS management system.
  • Conducting research and analysis activities to draft policy and other documentation for review and publication.
  • Developing, delivering, coordinating, planning and assessing WHS training programs; and where required, procuring WHS training or other services; managing contracts and service agreements.
  • Working with independence, subject to limited direction against established priorities, practices, and methodologies to deliver quality WHS outcomes.
  • Producing work requiring little or no revision before finalisation.
  • Contributing to the identification and implementation of WHS systems improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as required.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the WHS Act and other relevant WHS legislation;
  • Tertiary level qualifications in Workplace Health and Safety or demonstrated experience in WHS risk management, policy development and implementation;
  • Excellent written and stakeholder engagement skills, with proven ability to clearly communicate information and influence others;
  • Highly proficient in using Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Teams or similar programs;
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and under limited supervision.
  • Tertiary level qualifications in training and development or proven experience in design and/or development of training in WHS or other related areas is highly desirable;
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
